Go Green for Earth Day!

Earth Day - April 22
Earth Day – April 22

In the spirit of Earth Day, here are a few facts that can hopefully motivate all of us to consider our impact on the environment and to take action.

  1. Earth Day was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson on April 22, 1970.
  2. 20 million people participated in the first Earth Day.
  3. More than 100 billion pieces of junk mail are delivered in the United States each year.
  4. The U.S. buried or burned more than 166 million tons of resources – paper, plastic, metals, glass and organic materials – in landfills and incinerators last year.
  5. It only takes about 6 weeks total to manufacture, fill, sell, recycle, and then re-manufacture an aluminum beverage can.
  6. Half the world’s tropical and temperate forests are now gone.
  7. More than 2 million people globally die prematurely every year due to outdoor and indoor air pollution.
  8. Every year in the U.S. nearly 200 billion beverage containers are sold, two-thirds of which are land filled, incinerated or littered.
  9. Recycling, reuse and re-manufacturing account for 3.1 million jobs in the U.S.
  10. Recycling saves 3 to 5 times the energy that waste incinerator power plants generate.
  11. By reducing our waste 1% per year and recycling and composting 90% of our discards by 2030, we could save 406 megatons of carbon dioxide equivalent every year. This is the equivalent to shutting down 21% of our nation’s coal-fired power plants.
  12. More than 76% of cardboard boxes and 72% of newspaper were recycled in 2006 but less than 50% of printing and writing paper was recycled.

Let it be evergreen, let it be evergreen

And we are but an island in an ocean
This is our home, third from the sun
God, keep it evergreen
To keep it ever green I would lay my life down

And we are but an island in an ocean
This is our home, third from the sun
Let it be evergreen, let it be evergreen

  1. Both of my daughters are very active in going green and have gotten me to see where I can do my part as well. I have a long way to go, but am trying to incorporate as many reusable items as I can.

Articles like this that show great ways to go green and help the environment are wonderful, and I hope more people really take it to heart!

    1. It is so very important that we all think long and hard about what we can do to save our environment. Your daughters are on the right track! Thank you so much for your comment and good luck with going green!

  2. Hi there, Brenda. I live in Perth, Western Australia, and all the Supermarkets are going to stop supplying plastic bags in July of this Year. This is a great idea but I’ll need to find other ways of carrying my shopping home.
How much is the Farm to Fork Market Reusable Foldable Shopping Bag and the Be You-Nique Tyvek Reusable Tote?
    Thanks, Jeff.

    1. Hi Jeff, nice to meet you! It’s great that the supermarkets are discontinuing plastic bags. It is scary knowing how many of those go to landfills. The Be You-Nique tote is $19.80 and the Farm to Fork bag is $7.70. Great prices for reusable products! Thanks for your comment and let me know if you try one of them!

  3. Whenever I go to the local market or grocer, recycle bags are always in hand. At home, there are different boxes to sort plastic, paper and aluminium tins for recycling. Kids know what to do.

People should know and contribute more to a better earth. Thanks, Brenda for creating the awareness through your post. I like the Shibori Stainless Steel Water Bottle. Will check it out.

    Thanks again,
    Sharon

    1. Thank you Sharon! I am so happy to know that you are aware of our environment and are doing what you can to help! It is so very important that we keep our earth safe and green and livable! Let me know what you think of the water bottle! Please come back and visit anytime.

  4. The stats on your post about the junk mail, beverage containers and paper products being recycled is just horrific. I live in Canada and most places have recycle pick up right at your door. It’s hard to believe that people don’t recycle.
To think 2 billion beverage containers are sold is unbelievable.
I really like your ideas on the lunch bags and water bottles. There are so many great ones to choose from now. I also love a great re-usable shopping bag. One that washes easily!
Great post and thank you for writing it.

    1. Thank you Jill for your comment! It is awful what we are doing to our planet and I wish more people would get on track and start recycling and reusing products rather than throwing things in the trash where they end up in the landfills. It is so sad our beautiful Mother Earth is being hurt. It’s nice to know there are people like you that care!

  5. You present such a nice assortment of reusables and biodegradables, Brenda. They are certainly attractive, and my favorite is the wood-grained bottle. Enjoyed reading the facts related to Earth Day. I just heard this week that fast food places are being encouraged to replace plastic utensils and straws with wood.

    1. Thanks for dropping by Tanya! It seems like Earth Day has fallen off the grid a little in the last few years and I hope I have raised some awareness of the fact that we need to save our planet. I had not heard that the fast food places might replace plastic with wood, how wonderful!! Thank you for sharing 🙂

  6. I wish everyone would pay more attention to going green. I would love to see the plastic bags and bottles disappear. We could recycle so much more too. However, I do believe that we are headed in that direction, at least I hope so. The statistics you stated are very interesting. I wish everyone gets a chance to read them.
    This is a great article!

    1. Thanks Cynthia! I agree with you, everyone needs to pay more attention. Future generations are depending on us to keep our earth healthy. I’m glad you enjoyed the read, and please come back anytime to visit!

  7. I am a little late for Earth Day. But I am very wanting to take care of the environment and living life. I really like the wood style drinking containers. They are very stylish and safe for the environment at the same time. It is amazing that they can keep a drink cold for 24 hours. That is really something I need in the hot summer heat. Thank you for sharing these great ideas.

    1. Thanks for the comment Christina! It is so very important that we all take an active role in saving our planet. Even small things like I have mentioned can make a difference. I think just starting with little changes can lead to bigger ones! I’m so glad you liked my ideas and I am so glad you want to take care of our environment! Thanks again!
