Best Weighted Blankets

Weighted blankets are designed for people who battle symptoms of anxiety, insomnia, PTSD, restless leg and even depression.

Research has shown that a weighted blanket has been proven to increase serotonin and melatonin in the body, which helps a person relax, feel calmer, and fall asleep much easier.

In a recent study, 63% of people using a weighted blanket reported lower anxiety after use. Studies have also shown that nervous systems calm down when under the weight of a heavy blanket.

If anxiety is preventing you from getting quality sleep, a weighted blanket will go a long way toward fixing the problem – and may fix it entirely.

A research study by SciMed Central, Journal of Sleep Medicine & Disorders, states in part, “The weighted chain blanket used in the present study had a positive impact on sleep, both objectively and subjectively, where a number of physiological and behavioral measures were improved during weighted blanket use. When the participants used the weighted blanket, they had a calmer night’s sleep, with a decrease in movements. Subjectively, they believed that using the blanket provided them with a more comfortable, better quality, and more secure sleep. In conclusion, a weighted blanket may aid in reducing insomnia through increased tactile and proprioceptive inputs, may provide an innovative, non pharmacological approach and complementary tool to improve sleep quality.”

In other words, weighted blankets can:

  • Reduce anxiety
  • Calm the mind
  • Reduce restless leg syndrome
  • Make breathing easier
  • Combat general insomnia

I am very happy, pleased and honored to have become an affiliate of a wonderful company called Weighting Comforts.

Their story from the website goes like this:

The Weighting Comforts Story

While pursuing a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy, Donna, the founder, first noticed the effectiveness of a weighted blanket when she sewed them for clients who suffered from anxiety and reported a sense of relief. Word quickly spread about the blankets and soon Donna had partnered with her son Josh to sell blankets out of their garage.

Donna wanted to create the highest quality blanket possible for others who struggle with anxiety. Each weighted blanket is made from premium fabrics with Polypropylene weighted pellets in individual pockets for even weight distribution.

  1. Hi Brenda,  until I read your post, I had never heard of weighted blankets nor the therapeutic benefits that they can provide.  Yet, as I think of my sleep preferences, I unknowingly have created a situation where I like to sleep with some weight, on my legs in particular.   I have been using multiple blankets and pillows to get the effect.    In the summer, it is a bit more challenging because I don’t like to be hot when I sleep.

The only downside is I wish there was a version that would cover the entire bed as it would make it easier to make the bed in the morning if it could be left on.   Yet, I understand the the weighted parts would be wasted on the entire bed.   Also, if your spouse doesn’t like the weights that could be problematic.    Thanks for the introduction to the weighted blankets.

    1. Thank you so much for commenting on the weighted blankets, I appreciate it! Studies are certainly showing the therapeutic benefits of weighted blankets and it really makes sense. Like you said, we all seem to enjoy something around us. I like the way Weighting Comforts describes it as a “hug.” I agree it would be nice to have a blanket that fits the entire bed, but then the blanket that hangs over the bed is useless. Probably the best thing is to place the weighted blanket on the very top of the bed and that way it could be folded up during the day and the bed could be made. Just a thought! I hope you consider one for your own use and I hope you come back and visit me again!

  2. How interesting to read that these weighted blankets come in various weights for the elderly. That would suit me down to the ground as I can’t stand weight on my feet. My sister-in-law has restless leg syndrome so this sounds like something that would be perfect for her. She has tried so many things to help get a good nights sleep. I will definitely be bookmarking this so that I can give the details to my sister-in-law.

    1. Thank you for commenting, Jill! I am excited about these weighted blankets and how therapeutic they are. In my research I haven’t found any complaints, just testimonials about their benefits. I feel confident that your sister-in-law would benefit from one with her restless leg syndrome. I hope you show her my article! Please let me know if you or your sister-in-law decide to try one and I hope you come back to visit my site soon!

  3. Hello,

This is the first time I have heard the term ‘weighted blanket.’ Thank you for sharing this information.

I really mind the heat at night and most of the time thrust the top blanket off and just use a sheet. Would I find these too warm?

I think this would be wonderful for my daughter. She had a severe car accident 8 months ago and still suffers panic and anxiety attacks. I think this might be the perfect aid for her to help her get a good night’s sleep.

    1. Thanks for commenting on my weighted blankets! As for their warmth, the flannel blankets add warmth, the quilting cotton blankets add a little warmth, and the Cool Max blankets actively wick away body heat, adding no warmth. I am like you and get quite hot during the night so the Cool Max is the one for me. I am so sorry to hear about your daughter. I think you would really like it. I think the therapeutic benefits of these blankets could certainly help her. Please let me know if you decide to try one and what you think. I appreciate any and all feedback. I also hope you come back to my site again!

  4. Hi and thank you for an interesting article about the weighted blanket. It sounds like something that would help me with my sleeping. My question is, is there a trial period and can I return the blanket for a refund if it doesn’t work for me? We have very hot summers where even a light sheet is too hot to sleep under. Will it keep me cool in these kind of condition?

    1. Hi Rina, thanks for your comment! The return policy for Weighting Comforts is they recommend trying the blanket for one week in the following ways:

Place the weighted blanket on top of your comforter, covering your whole body from chest to toes.Use the weighted blanket on top of your sheet, with no comforter.Place the weighted blanket only on the lower half of your body.Place the weighted blanket only on the upper half of your body.If you have a feeling of anxiety with the blanket on you, take a deep breath and remind yourself, “I can remove this blanket at any time.” Some people find it takes several nights to adjust to the weight.Consider exchanging for a lighter weight blanket.

Returns are allowed as long as the blanket is completely clean.

As for your hot summer nights, I would suggest trying a Cool Max blanket as they actively wick away body heat, adding no warmth.

Let me know if you decide to get one. I would love to hear how you like it!

  5. Hi Brenda, and thanks for this great post!

This is a new concept for me, and I really like it. I suffer from insomnia, as well as depression and anxiety. As does my son.

The theory behind this weighted blanket makes so much sense. It’s like being hugged while you sleep for a sense of security. And the wick away material would be a definite plus because I’m always hot at night. That’s why I kick off all the blankets, but maybe that’s why I’m not sleeping well.

Thank you so much for this blog. I’m sending it on to my son, too!

    1. Thanks for commenting Suzanne! When I first heard of weighted blankets I didn’t quite understand but it is like you said, they give that feeling of being hugged while sleeping. That is a wonderful feeling isn’t it! I hope you try one for your insomnia, depression and anxiety. The research has shown that these blankets really do help. And I hope your son tries one too. I hope you come back to my site again and good luck!

  6. Weighted blankets may really come in handy. I know especially in the winter I really enjoy the mounds of blanket on the bed and the added weight, I just seem to sleep better that way. I will look into these a bit further as I think they would really help me sleep better all year long. I am really glad I come across this article as my husband suffers from restless leg and it may help him as well.

    1. Thanks Dena for your comment! It is interesting how we all seem to understand that being under weight when sleeping makes us feel better! To have an actual weighted blanket that does this seems very natural. I know for me I certainly sleep better. I have seen in the studies that a weighted blanket will help those people suffering from restless leg syndrome so you should definitely consider one for your husband. I hope you come back and visit me soon and thanks again for leaving a comment!
